CBT and Mindfulness for children and adolescents

Child and Teen therapist Liz Calley working with child

I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Imagination Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support young people and teenagers with their mental health. These evidence-based therapies help children and adolescents to understand emotional challenges, build resilience, and achieve their full potential. Before qualifying as a therapist, I spent nearly 20 rewarding years in the classroom which has informed my therapeutic approach; I understand the complexities of the school environment for today's young people.

I provide a supportive and engaging child therapy environment, tailoring each session to your child’s unique needs and interests. Using creative therapeutic techniques such as relaxation exercises, role-play, mindfulness, storytelling, digital media, visualisation, games, and art, I help children express themselves, manage emotions, and build confidence.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for children offers practical, everyday tools to support emotional well-being and mental health. This evidence-based approach helps your child recognize and challenge negative thought patterns, replacing them with more positive and constructive ways of thinking. By learning new perspectives, children develop healthier responses to stress, anxiety, and difficult situations.

Through CBT, your child gains effective coping strategies that can improve their life right now—while also building emotional habits that support long-term growth, confidence, and resilience.

CBT will help your child learn to control:

  • Tantrums

  • Impulsivity

  • Defiance

  • Self-defeating thoughts

  • Anxiety

Examples of CBT Techniques I Use with Children

  • Cognitive Restructuring: Helping children reframe negative thoughts into more balanced, positive ones—for example, shifting from “I’m rubbish at rugby” to “I’m not the best rugby player, but I enjoy the game and I’m great at other things too.”

  • Behaviour Modelling: Demonstrating positive responses to challenges like peer conflict or bullying, then practicing new behaviours through role-play.

  • Gradual Exposure: Gently introducing anxiety-triggering situations after cognitive preparation to build confidence and reduce fear.

  • Creative Play Therapy: Using arts, crafts, and role-play to explore emotions, develop problem-solving skills, and support emotional expression.

Each session is carefully tailored to your child or teen’s unique needs, using proven therapeutic tools that help them face challenges with confidence—promoting a calmer, happier, and more empowered mindset. I stay up to date with the latest research to ensure I use evidence-based, scientifically supported techniques that deliver real results.
